Mozambique can and must keep potato growing inside its own country

January 2024

The Mozambican region of Zambezi is lagging quite far behind in the domains of agriculture and economy. The increasing production in the many coal mines is fairly slow in boosting the country’s income, so it needs a strong stimulus to bring more prosperity. One of the options to improve this situation is the cultivation of potatoes. ‘Potato Professor’ Anton Haverkort of Wageningen University recently visited Mozambique. He was commissioned by the Zambezi Valley Development Agency (ZVDA) to examine how the people in that area could earn more money by growing potatoes. He also examined what Dutch companies and institutions could contribute to such a development.
