The company N-xt Fertilizers in the town of Emmen has already been active on Dutch soil for almost 20 years now. It started as a franchisee of an originally-American concept, but has now been working independently for 6 years already. As far as fertilisation is concerned, the company has its very own strategy which is, in fact, based on the vision of ‘better growing results and healthier food production start with a fertile soil’. A potato grower who has embraced these N-xt basic principles for the past 16 years, is Arnold van Woerkom. The icing on the cake is the recent delivery of his own W16 potatoes to various hospitals in the Netherlands. The main reason is that they contain 30 percent more minerals. Van Woerkom and Technical Director Marco van Gurp of N-xt Fertilizers explain the how and why.

Water limitation of potato crop yields at the soil and plant level
When the potato crop has just been planted, soil surface water evaporates. After emergence, the plant loses water through transpiration. The term for evaporation and transpiration added together is evapotranspiration. When over a certain period, precipitation from rain and irrigation is less than evapotranspiration, the soil loses water from its reserve.
Pre-planting operations in potato cultivation: Tillage
Of all arable crops, potato needs the most extensive tillage and is not suitable for no (zero), low or minimum tillage. The latter are two systems where the topsoil is not or only marginally disturbed. Low tillage is usually only applied for combinable crops.

Salinity worldwide is an increasing soil problem, especially in coastal areas with salt water intrusion. Salt also accumulates where irrigation takes place without proper drainage. Crop-soil-water relations
Agronomists need to establish a water balance to calculate the effect of water shortage on potato yields for use in explorations and decision support. Water balances allow the calculation of crop loss when there is a shortage and they also permit the calculation of the irrigation amount needed.
