Dutch seed improves Kenyan potato chain

January 2024

Around thirty years ago, Kenya closed its borders for seed from abroad. Today, not even two percent of Kenyan potatoes originate from certified seed potatoes. And yet, the potato is Kenya’s second biggest crop after maize. Since 2013, it has again been possible to export Dutch seed potatoes to Kenya. At the same time, an innovative seed potato project was started aimed at improving the Kenyan potato chain. During a trade mission of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, it transpired that collaboration with Kenyan partners provides the basis for enhancing food security.
