Exploring the holistic ecosystem elements of Potato Sustainability

April 11, 2025

The World Potato Congress continues its commitment to advancing global potato knowledge and sustainability with its upcoming webinar titled “The Ecosystem Elements of Potato Sustainability.” This will be held on Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at 4:00 PM EST (USA/Toronto) and will feature John Mesko, CEO of the Potato Sustainability Alliance (PSA), as the keynote presenter.

In the race to make agriculture more sustainable, numbers and metrics play a crucial role, but they don’t tell the whole story. According to Mesko, ‘metrics alone are insufficient to tell a coherent, meaningful sustainability story for potatoes.’ The PSA is changing the narrative by developing a comprehensive sustainability program that goes beyond data points. This program is designed to meet farmers where they are, acknowledging the diversity of growing practices, and to help share the full, authentic story of how potato farming contributes to environmental and economic sustainability.

Participants in the webinar can expect to gain insights into how ecosystem elements such as soil health, biodiversity, climate resilience, and farmer well-being are woven into PSA’s approach. It’s a story that resonates not only with growers but also with retailers, consumers, and policymakers looking for transparency and long-term impact in agricultural systems.
