India’s HyFun Foods Underlines PotatoEurope’s Internationalization

August 19, 2025

The PotatoEurope trade fair is steadily growing into an increasingly international event, where players from outside Europe also share their vision, technology and product approach. A striking example of this development is the arrival of HyFun Foods, a fast-growing name in the frozen snacks industry, known for its innovation and quality from India that will make its appearance at the fair in Lelystad, The Netherlands in September 2025

HyFun Foods, based in Mehsana in the Indian state of Gujarat, has quickly become the largest exporter of frozen potato products in India. The company supplies fries, wedges, hash browns and other convenience products to international fast-food chains, supermarkets and food service companies in more than forty countries. With a fully integrated chain approach, from seed potatoes to frozen products, HyFun shows that quality and innovation can also develop outside Europe and North America. What makes HyFun unique is the combination of technological innovation, large-scale processing and intensive collaboration with thousands of smallholder farmers. This is in line with the growing demand from the international market for sustainable, traceable and socially responsible food chains.

“We Don’t Just Come To Show Products”

“Our strength lies in an integrated system that combines scale with quality, traceability and sustainability,” explains Haresh Karamchandani, MD & Group CEO of HyFun Foods.

“We are here not only to showcase products, but to show that world-class frozen potato products can also come from India,” says Haresh Karamchandani, MD & Group CEO of HyFun Foods. “Our strength lies in an integrated system that combines scale with quality, traceability and sustainability.” With their booth at PotatoEurope 2025 (booth F4-01 in hall F), HyFun not only wants to tap into new markets, but also set an example of how agriculture in emerging economies can be organized professionally, forward-looking and inclusively.

HyFarm: Farmers As A Foundation

The beating heart of HyFun’s success is its agri- business unit HyFarm. This farmer connect arm of the company currently works directly with more than 7,000 smallholder farmers in India, providing them with support in the areas of seed potatoes, cultivation techniques, irrigation, fertilization and disease incidence. An important part is the so-called ‘pre-agreed buy-back model’, in which farmers are given certainty in advance about sales, price and quality criteria. “HyFarm’s core mission is to empower farmers with knowledge, resources and trust, so that the harvest meets global standards, but at the same time supports local life,” emphasizes Soundararadjane S, Chief Executive Officer of HyFarm. Through the HyFarm Paathshala – Farm Schools – farmers are trained in precision agriculture, climate-resilient cultivation methods, and regenerative practices, establishing farmer owned frontline demonstration plots. The results are impressive: lower production costs, higher yields, better quality and a stable income for thousands of families with often less than 2 hectares of agricultural land.

Technology On The Field

“HyFarm’s core mission is to empower farmers with knowledge, resources and trust, so that the harvest meets global standards, but at the same time supports local life,” emphasizes Soundararadjane S, CEO, HyFarm.

To further scale its success, HyFun is investing heavily in digitization of agriculture. Through  FarmOji  a mobile app, farmers receive personalized cultivation advice, warnings for disease pressure and information about irrigation and harvest times. In addition, the company uses IoT and AI, which helps farmer make smart recommendations for fertilization and irrigation based on soil moisture. The computer vision based contributes to direct quality control of the harvested produce. These technologies ensure that even farmers with limited resources can benefit from precision and data-driven agriculture, with which HyFun wants to distinguish itself internationally.

Why PotatoEurope?

HyFun’s choice to participate in PotatoEurope is strategic. According to Mr. Haresh Karamchandani, PotatoEurope offers an excellent opportunity to get in touch with European business partners and technology developers. “PotatoEurope allows us to show the world what is possible when you combine technology, inclusivity and a long-term vision,” said the MD & Group CEO of HyFun Foods. “We believe that our approach, in which small farmers not only participate but also benefit, can also be inspiring elsewhere in the world.”

From Regional Success To Global Player

HyFun was founded in 2015 and had a clear vision from the start: full control over the valuen chain, from seed potatoes to end product. The company now processes large volumes of potatoes for the international market every year and is working towards doubling its production capacity. By 2029, HyFun wants to process more than 1 million tons of potatoes annually, connect with 30,000 farmers under HyFarm and expand the acreage to 32,000 hectares. With the arrival of HyFun at PotatoEurope, the company underlines that India, as an emerging agricultural powerhouse, must be taken seriously within the global potato sector. Not only because of the volume, but especially because of the way in which the company combines local agriculture with modern processing, supply-chain management and sustainability. Or as Mr. Karamchandani aptly puts it: “We are not building a simple value chain from production to sales. We are building ecosystems of trust, transparency and progress, from Indian soil to the consumer’s plate, anywhere in the world.”
