John Griffin new President of the World Potato Congress

The World Potato Congress (WPC) Inc. has recently presented John Griffin as its new President and CEO.

Griffin is the President of WP Griffin Inc., a family owned grower, packer and shipper of potatoes located in Elmsdale, Prince Edward Island (Canada). He has been a member of the WPC Board of Directors since 2007 and served as Vice-President for the past four years. ‘Mr. Griffin brings with him a vast knowledge of the potato industry’, says Romain Cools who, serving in the WPC’s board for 16 years and the past four years as President, has stepped down as WPC President and CEO.

New Vice-President

Cools also announced that Peter VanderZaag will be stepping into the role of Vice-President of the WPC. VanderZaag is President of and a partner in Sunrise Potato, and serves as visiting professor at the Yunnan Normal University in Kunming, China. ‘Peter has worked in over 60 countries around the world with the International Potato Centre (CIP), where he developed potato programs, and to improve crop management and potato production. His knowledge of the potato crop is recognized worldwide’, Cools states.

New directors and International Advisors

The WPC also welcomes two new Directors. Next to André Devaux, an International Advisor with the WPC since 2018 and currently the project lead on the International Potato Day, PotatoWorld magazine Editor in Chief Jaap Delleman has joined the Board of Directors. ‘In a sector that never stands still, Jaap continuously develops himself and his business strategy in order to be of service to all links in the potato chain’, the organisation states. In order to make the organisation truly representative of all regions of the world, the WPC this week also introduced five new International Advisors to the audience: Martin Acosta, Julio Kalazich, Ghislain Pelletier, Blair Richardson and Santosh Kumar Tiwari. The 11th World Potato Congress was recently held in Dublin, while the 12th edition will be held from June 23-26, 2024 in Adelaide, Australia.
