In between the many rain showers, the organisation of PotatoEurope 2024, the international potato event that will take place on 11 and 12 September in the northern French town of Villers-Saint-Christophe, has completed the planting work.
On 1 and 2 May, the potatoes from the demoplot of PotatoEurope 24 were planted under good conditions. A total of 22 hectares of the Daisy variety from the French trading house Germicopa were planted on these days by the ARVALIS research institute in the important potato-growing area of North Picardy. The yield of 1,200 tons from the plot will go to McCain.
ARVALIS is a well-known French knowledge institute that, with 450 employees and an annual budget of 55 million euros, conducts applied research focused on arable crops, with a strong focus on the cultivation and storage of potatoes. The institute focuses on applied research, innovations, support and advice to growers and the various sectors in agriculture to improve production. That is why the demonstration field of PotatoEurope will form a broad backdrop for about 30 practical demonstrations, including harvesting, storage, haulm killing, weeding and optical sorting.
In addition to the demofield, 18 hectares have been set up with stands, where a total of more than three hundred exhibitors will present themselves to the expected 15,000 visitors from fifty different countries. There is also a conference room. Here, the Dutch Potato Organisation (NAO), together with the Dutch embassy in Paris, will organise an international knowledge event on the first day of the fair. The close cooperation between the Netherlands and France and the associated opportunities in the market will be explained. For more information about PotatoEurope: www.potatoeurope.fr
