Agrico: With heart and soil. Committed to the next generation

October 30, 2023

‘Around the world, there is an increasing demand for professionally, successfully and sustainably cultivated potatoes. Thanks to changing climatic conditions, world population growth and changing consumer demands, it’s becoming more important than ever to continue research and breeding work’, Agrico explains.

‘Jacky is characterized by its beautiful small tubers and the very high tuber number per plant.’

‘A large part of this increased demand for potatoes will have to be met by innovations in plant breeding. Besides increasing acreage, today’s goal is also to minimize input (water, nitrogen, crop protection products) while maximizing output (crop return). To make the breeding process more efficient and to accelerate the development of new varieties, Agrico Research is continuously improving the breeding program. Developments in the field of molecular genetics are rapid. Agrico Research uses the latest insights into genetics and continuously casts a critical eye over the available breeding techniques.’

Spotlight varieties

Every year Agrico selects a number of varieties that warrant extra attention. ‘These ‘spotlight varieties’ are young, innovative varieties that are currently taking the market by storm. This year, Agrico’s spotlight varieties are Jacky and Lugano.’

Very high tuber number per plant

‘Lugano has large tubers, good processing properties and a broad nematode resistance’, Douwe Werkman, Product Manager shares his knowledge.

‘Jacky is characterized by its beautiful small tubers and the very high tuber number per plant. It has a strong late blight resistance in foliage and tuber and is therefore part of Agrico’s Next Generation portfolio. Jacky is an important variety for the future and will offer great added value in both cultivation and on the consumers plate.’

Very broad nematode resistance

‘Lugano has large tubers, good processing properties and a broad nematode resistance. It also has good dormancy and storability. This makes Lugano very successful in the French fries industry and the traditional markets’, Douwe Werkman, Product Manager shares his knowledge.
