Making potato growing future-proof with robust varieties key in HZPC breeding work

In the breeding process, HZPC focuses on robust varieties with a high yield. With this focus, the company aims to have a positive impact on the entire value chain worldwide.

The Dutch potato breeding and trading company plans to illustrate its key focus in breeding work during the Potato Variety Days 2022. On November 9, HZPC organizes an online show revolving around the future of seed potato cultivation, to inspire the potato chain. Guests can also visit the Potato Days physically on November 10 and 11.

Even Greener

The company wants to emphasize that potatoes are a sustainable choice. ‘Compared to rice or wheat, the crop has a small carbon footprint. And this footprint is getting even smaller now, because with every new variety we introduce, HZPC raises the bar. In our continuous search for new, better, future-proof potato varieties, we regularly discover wonderful things,’ says the company. In the run-up to and during the Potato Variety Days, HZPC presents the Even Greener variety package: a selection of even more sustainable varieties with a lower impact on the environment, all of which, according to HZPC, score above average on five sustainable characteristics. The user can determine online which of these properties are most important. HZPC then offers a potato variety that meets those wishes, giving access to the most sustainable potato varieties.

As the world is facing many challenges, HZPC believes there is no time to waste when it comes to a healthy planet. ‘Day in, day out, we work on creating new and better varieties that grow under different circumstances and climates. Natural resources must be respected and protected. By continuing to innovate, we ensure that we can contribute to this. Together with our partners we are making potato growing future-proof.’
