Potato Association of America to showcase industry advances during annual meeting

July 11, 2023

The annual meeting of the Potato Association of America (PAA) is scheduled to take place from July 23rd to 27th, 2023. PAA members, potato researchers and industry partners will gather in Charlottetown, the capital of Prince Edward Island. ‘We look forward to welcoming the PAA family to Prince Edward Island for the first time since 1997. We are excited to showcase the advances that our growers and industry partners have been making in sustainable potato production and innovative technology in recent years’, the association states.

With its annual meeting, PAA wants to provide attendees with educational and networking opportunities, potato research updates, and presentations from industry representatives. Key activities are research presentations, information exchange, identification of professional contacts, and participation in association business meetings. Other highlights include the research, field, and industry tours the organisation offers before and after the meeting.

Largest producer of potatoes

‘We look forward to showing visitors a great time with true island hospitality, complete with all of the things that Prince Edward Island is known for. This includes great food, such as fresh seafood and potatoes, and a welcoming rural community where agriculture is the number one industry. Prince Edward Island has been the largest producer of potatoes in Canada for many years and continues to produce close to 25 percent of Canada’s potato crop. Its long history of growing potatoes dates back to some of the first settlers in the late 18th century’, the Local Host Committee explains.

Collecting the best information available

The Potato Association of America was formed in 1913 by a handful of dedicated individuals from Maine, New York, Colorado and Washington D.C. Members are primarily from the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Latin America, but another 30 countries throughout the world are represented in the membership. The PAA aims to collect and disseminate the best available technical and practical information relating to all aspects of potato production, biology, and utilization. It is the association’s objective to serve as the official professional society for those involved in potato research, extension, production, and utilization. Furthermore, the association publishes the American Journal of Potato Research as a means of disseminating the latest information relating to potato science, including breeding and genetics, crop and storage management, marketing, processing, disease and pest control, and new variety releases.
