This is thanks, in particular, to the extreme growing conditions that have allowed breeders to get rid of the ‘weaklings’ such as numbers with growth cracks’, as they describe it so beautifully in their breeders’ jargon. The question that then arises is to what extent is breeding influenced by weather extremes such as those of last season and the possibly-changing climate. This was the question put to the variety development experts at the 2016 Variety Presentations in Emmeloord at the beginning of November.
