Crusty potato lifehack

June 2023

A lifehack is a skill that makes life easier, often by applying something in a different way. The short preparation time, the few steps and the very unique way of processing make this dish a delicious hack.

Side dish, serves 4 to 6 people. Preparation time: approximately 10 minutes (plus 60 minutes in the oven).

  • 5 big, floury potatoes
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons of melted, salty butter
  • Freshly-ground pepper
  • 2 tablespoons of fresh, grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon of paprika powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder

Preheat oven to 180°C.
Scrub the skin of the potatoes thoroughly with a vegetable brush. Prick the potatoes all around a few times. Bake them in a pre-heated oven for 45 minutes until they are done. Take them out of the oven and turn up the oven to 240° C.
Cut each potato into 4 quarters. Place them, skin down, on a baking sheet lined with greaseproof paper. Crush the cooked potato flesh with a fork. Brush with the melted butter. Sprinkle with pepper. Mix the Parmesan cheese with the paprika and garlic powder. Sprinkle on top.
Bake the quarters for 20 to 30 minutes until golden brown and nice and crusty.

Tip: Cooking the potato in the microwave is even faster. Allow about 2 to 3 minutes per potato at full power. Turn around halfway and leave them for a short while at the end.
