Custom-built Tong potato solution increases US processor’s sizing potential

Potato processor Skone & Connors Produce, Inc. chose a custom-built potato grading and washing solution from Tong Engineering.

With the new washing system, the Washington State based potato processor can increase sizing potential of both dirty and washed crop. Featuring the most advanced potato grading, washing and polishing equipment as well as the most intelligent controls, it maximises efficiency and minimises waste across the company’s entire potato processing operation.

Upgrade

Skone & Connors Produce, Inc., based in Warden, Washington State, grows over 2,500 acres of fresh potatoes for Basin Gold, their sales and marketing group. The new grading and washing line gently handles the crop from truck to bags and boxes. the company’s President and partner, Bart Connors, is impressed by the design and equipment within the line. ‘Its technology is very impressive and it makes the flow of crop really efficient’, he said. ‘We can control the entire line, including making quick and easy changes for bypass and speeds, as well as washer and polisher control at the touch of a screen, or via WiFi on our tablet. It’s really user-friendly.’

Remote support

With engineering roots dating back to 1930, Tong Engineering has grown into an Internationally renowned manufacturer of high-quality grading, washing, polishing, processing and box handling equipment. ‘Bart and the team were very keen to not only incorporate the most advanced equipment but also the most intelligent controls and that really has paid off’, explained Charlie Rich, Export Sales Manager and Head of US Sales at Tong Engineering. ‘When specifying the features, we knew that they would bring Skone & Connors next-level control, whilst allowing Tong engineers to provide comprehensive remote-support. We could never have imagined just how invaluable these would prove to be in such unprecedented times,’ Rich added. The installation took place during COVID lockdown in both the UK and US, which had its challenges. ‘With remote support from the UK, alongside our local Tong USA mechanical and installation team, we ensured that the installation and delivery schedule continued with minimal disruption,’ the Export Sales Manager emphasized. ‘From our initial meeting with Tong, to their communication throughout the design process, and their true determination in ensuring delivery, installation and commissioning during a worldwide pandemic, Tong showed great dedication and attention to detail’, Connors confirmed.
